When you look at the Las Choyas Coconut Geode, you see what humanity most desires.

In the Orma J. Smith Museum of Natural History, behind a display case, lies a special geode that contains the deepest yearning of the heart. Although it catches your eye as it twinkles under the lights, the Las Choyas Coconut Geode calls out in hopes that you would understand that it is what you cannot always see that matters. When you look at the Las Choyas Coconut Geode, you see what humanity most desires. The Coconut Geode encourages you to look beyond what lies on the outside, to crack open and cherish each unique and individual nuances of life, nature, and geodes themselves.

Geodes are naturally found in areas such as the United States, Brazil, and Uruguay. Las Choyas Coconut Geodes are found mostly in north central Chihuahua, and Municipio de Aldama is where the main geode mine owned by the Carrillo family is located. Coconut Geodes form when pockets of air form cavities inside of hot, volcanic ash. As mineral-enriched water gets into the cavity over the years, it deposits crystals on the insides of the pocket, thus forming the Geode. The Coconut Geodes tend to grow in pods together like potatoes!

The geological creation of the Coconut Geode is a reflection of humanities own formation, and of how elements such as location, pressure, and surrounding material all play a key role in who we become. When we grow up, during our most formative years we also create a cavity. We take up a space, ready to be filled with knowledge, and experiences- to let the water in. Like the silt in the ground water, what we choose to take in leaves something behind within us.

The distinguishing attribute of the Las Choyas Coconut geode is its solid interior of white and blue agate, which gives it that "coconut" appearance with the smooth white interior and the round, lumpy brown exterior. Coconut Geodes can contain that smooth agate or can be lined with quartz crystals that range from smoky quartz to amethyst. We as humans desire to be cracked open and admired for our true value and inner brilliance, exactly like the Las Choyas Coconut Geode.
